Black families only have $5 of wealth for every $100 of white wealth because of systems of oppression put into place denying access to equitable healthcare, education, housing, employment, etc. During the pandemic, approximately 45% of Black and Latino adults said that their families experienced material hardship such as food insecurity or the inability to fully pay their mortgage, rent, or utilities—almost DOUBLE the share of white adults and their families.
The Underground Railroad is often romanticized with a mental image of enslaved people traveling from house to house until they reached freedom. But traveling along the Underground Railroad was a long, perilous journey, with those fleeing to freedom sometimes traveling 10-20 miles per day for as far as 1000 miles. Some nights were spent in hollow trees or under brush not only fearing starvation and capture, but also threats such as wild animals, crossing treacherous terrain, and surviving severe temperatures.
Only 23% of characters in children’s books represent African American, Latinx, AAPI, and Native American populations with white people or animals taking up the majority. There are more animal characters than African American, Asian, Latinx, and Native American characters combined.
2,808 hate incidents occurred against Asian Americans in 2020. These hate crimes are reported by women 2.3 times more than men.
During transatlantic slave trade from 1525 to 1866, an estimated 12.5 million people, the combined population of Los Angeles and New York City today, were kidnapped from Africa and shipped in chains to foreign lands for enslavement.
